I wondered which countries sent a disproportionate number of visits to the Viridescent blog this year. I used Google Analytics data to identify the 30 countries that sent the most visits (see the table here), and then I compared those visits to the population of the country, and to the number of golf holes in that country.

I use the number of golf holes as an indicator of the size of the golf industry in that country, and I imagine that many of the visits to the site are from people who are interested in golf turf.

Those data on number of golf holes were interesting on their own, so for those 30 countries, I’ve put together this treemap. I used the highcharter R package to make it.

The 30 countries are divided into continents. You can click around to zoom in on the countries within a continent. And the pointer or popup shows the total number of golf holes, and also the number of golf holes per 100,000 population, for each of the countries.

The United States, for example, has 79 golf holes for every 100,000 people. Thailand has 7. So does Italy. Ireland and New Zealand both have 132. Iceland has 262.
